1. Create impressive resume
The purpose of the resume is to win you an invitation for an interview. Some interviewers recommend to stick to a standard format for your resume, but this depends on the position you are applying for. In any case, don’t forget to include your education and work experience starting with the most recent position held. Also, don’t forget to adjust your resume for each position you are applying to because interviewers will look for certain keywords indicating that you qualify for the job.
2. Don’t forget your motivational letter
Apart from your resume, you can distinguish yourself from the other candidates with a well-written motivational letter. It has to be written with respect to the position you are applying to and the requirements for it. Give examples to illustrate your statements and emphasize your strengths. Don’t use learned phrases and templates, but rather write sincerely for your experience and what you could offer to the company you want to work for.
3. Go to the interview prepared
Before going to the interview research the company and what it does. Look at the website and find out what is the company’s culture. Ask questions and show your interest in the job. In addition, think how you would answer the standard questions which the interviewers might ask, such as: “How do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?”, “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” and “What motivates you?”.
4. Make a good impression on your first day at work
After you have passed the recruiting process, you have received an offer and you have accepted it, try to make a good impression on your first day of work. Don’t forget it is important to work well with your new team because you will be spending a major part of your days with them.
5. Put things in perspective
Remember that your first job won’t determine your whole career. Very often it happens that people change their field of work with a completely different one which at a later point has become more attractive to them. This is why you should put the effort to take the maximum out of your first job. It is a great opportunity to figure out what are you good at, what you want to do and how you want to grow professionally. The first job is a step towards your dream job. So keep that in mind and keep growing. Remember that your first job might not be the dream job, but it is a step in the right direction.
